kilts, meat, and white house bound boo boos

2004-07-16 - 1:05 p.m.

I needed to get out some of the emotions that were bogging me down today. I feel like I'm PMSing, but clearly it's not the right time.

It's been an interesting few days. A child and his mother were riding the Metro elevator with Mel and me down to the trains.

When the door opened so we could get out, the child looked from me to his mother and curiously inquired, "Mommy, why does she have a boo boo?"

I immediately thought to myself, "I like this kid." Many other little kids have questioned their mothers/fathers/relatives/babysitters about me in the past, but it's always been things like, "What's wrong with her?" or "Why does she walk like that?" I think my favorite times are when they ask either of those two questions but insert him/he, because they think that clearly someone wearing a skirt must be a boy, because she has such short hair.

Well, I've got news.

I'm not Scottish.

I'm not male.

I may be conservatively flaxen-locked, but I sure ain't wearin' no kilt.

Anyway, this kid in the elevator was a little more subtle in his question (and he was also cute as a button)...

So I answered him, "I don't have a boo boo, sweetie."

At which point, he stared at me, eyes wide, clearly confused.

"Mommy, why does she have a boo boo?" I heard him ask again, possibly twice, as they were walking away.

I had my White House tour/interview for a possible internship next year. It looks as though I'll probably be working in either the Office of the Public Liaison or at the Domestic Policy Council.

Dude, I could be working for the President!!!! How cool!!!

Tonight, I'm going shopping with Mel, and we're going to see I, Robot with Sean and some friends. Not too sure about the quality of the afforementioned film, but I'll let you know.

I still want to see The Terminal. Hopefully, we'll get around to that one sometime soon.

Well.... it's back to work for me. Day 547 in the government meatlocker that is my cubicle. Until we meet again....
